What is a Russian manicure?

What a Russian e-file manicure is, how it differs from a regular manicure, whether it's safe, how long it lasts and what it costs in Boston.

The nail tech's gloved hand holding a client's hand with red almond nails

A Russian manicure is a dry manicure done with an electric file, or e-file. Instead of soaking your hands and clipping the cuticles, the nail tech lifts the cuticle and clears the dead skin on the nail with fine rotating bits. Gel color can then sit close to the cuticle line, so the manicure looks neat and grows out cleanly.

In the US you'll also see it called an e-file manicure, a dry manicure or a combination manicure.

What happens at the appointment

  1. Previous gel is removed.
  2. Nails are shaped and the cuticle area is cleaned dry with an e-file.
  3. A strengthening, leveling layer evens out the nail.
  4. Gel color, or a design such as French, chrome or cat eye.

Is it safe?

When it's done by a trained nail tech, yes. The e-file is meant to work on dead skin, not living skin. Problems come from rushing, over-filing the nail, or working on skin that's already irritated.

That's also why a careful studio will turn down or stop a service when it sees signs of infection, fungus, open wounds or inflammation, and may suggest seeing a doctor first.

How long does it last?

Gel color typically holds three to four weeks. What usually brings people back is regrowth at the base, and because color starts close to the cuticle line, regrowth stays neat for longer.

What it costs

Specialist studios around Boston typically charge somewhere around $100 to $170 for a Russian manicure with gel color. At CUTEMANIA Nail Studio in West Roxbury it's $110 with gel color, $125 with a design such as French, chrome or cat eye, and $75 with no polish. Long nails are $15 extra.

How to prepare

Don't trim your cuticles or do your own manicure right before the appointment. Fresh cuts and irritated skin make cuticle work harder and less comfortable.

Making it last

  • Cuticle oil once a day keeps the skin soft.
  • Gloves for cleaning products and dishes.
  • Don't use your nails as tools.
  • If a nail lifts, don't pick at it. At CUTEMANIA, issues within 3 days of your appointment are fixed at no charge, provided there's no external damage and aftercare was followed.
